The Mayor of Lagoa, Cristina Calisto, considered that
this is a "historic day" for the city, as it is the largest private
investment ever made in the municipality
At the
opening ceremony on March 8th, the chairman of the board of
directors of the Hospital Internacional dos Açores, Luís Farinha, said that the
new unit in Lagoa features more than 40 specialties, some of which do not exist
in the Azores, and intends to offer its customers “excellent health care”, with
96 beds and five operating rooms.
At the
moment, there are only three hospitals in the Azores, all assigned to the
Regional Health Service, in Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), Angra do Heroísmo
(Terceira) and Horta (Faial).
Luís
Farinha said that, due to the specialties the hospital features, it will be
possible to prevent the need for some users of the Regional Health Service to
travel to the mainland, therefore helping to fight waiting lists in the public
system. It will be possible to promote an “elimination of distances, through
teleconsultation, with other islands”, also using partnerships with external
agents connected to the health service, having already signed agreements with
several insurers and ADSE.
Isabel
Cássio is the clinical director of the hospital which will create 300
jobs and is equipped with a 3 Tesla MRI equipment, a 128-slice TAC, five
operating rooms, one of which hybrid, allowing different surgical procedures to
be combined in the same space and same patient, as well as maternity, intensive
and permanent care units.
The Hospital Internacional dos Açores was opened three years after the
start of its construction, in a ceremony that was also attended by the President
of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro. The unit is not yet fully
operational and the administration plans a phased opening of all the services.
